How this exchange rate calculator converts your money
The math is deliberately simple and fully transparent:
converted = amount × rate
inverse rate = 1 / rate
where rate is the number of units of the target currency per 1 unit of the source currency — the exact figure you type in. There is no live exchange-rate feed and no stored FX table: nothing is fetched, nothing is remembered by date. That is a deliberate choice, and it is why the tool works offline and keeps your amounts private. The currency codes are labels only; they do not look anything up. Because the result depends entirely on the rate you supply, treat it as informational — the mid-market rate you see quoted online is a reference midpoint, and the rate your bank, card network or exchange bureau actually applies typically carries a 1–4% margin plus fees on top. For a realistic figure, enter the exact rate your provider quoted rather than the mid-market rate.
The same $2,000, three rates
Two thousand dollars converted at the rate you read online, the rate a card actually gives, and a different pair entirely.
The rate you look up: 0.92
from $2,0001,840.00 EUR
- $2,000 at the quoted mid-market rate of 0.92 buys 1,840.00 euros.
- The inverse rate reads 1 EUR = 1.08696 USD — the same price in the other direction.
- Every 100 dollars converts to 92 euros, straight off the quick-reference table.
The mid-market rate is a reference midpoint — nobody’s card actually settles at it.
Load this example (opens in a new tab)The rate a card gives: a 3% margin
from $2,0001,784.80 EUR
- A 3% margin moves the rate from 0.92 to 0.8924 — a small-looking change.
- The same $2,000 now buys 1,784.80 euros, 55.20 fewer than the mid-market figure.
- Per 100 dollars, the quick-reference table shows 89.24 euros instead of 92.
The margin never appears as a fee on the receipt — it hides inside the rate itself.
Load this example (opens in a new tab)A different direction: 150 yen per dollar
from $2,000300,000.00 JPY
- With yen at 150 per dollar, $2,000 becomes 300,000 yen.
- The inverse rate answers the return trip: 1 JPY = 0.00666667 USD.
- A rate above 1 means more units out than in — the direction of the pair decides which way.
Big numbers do not mean more money; 300,000 yen and $2,000 are the same value at this rate.

Getting an honest currency conversion, in plain English
- You control the rate. This currency converter never guesses — look up today’s rate from your bank, broker or a rate site and type it in, so the result is exactly as fresh as your number.
- Mid-market ≠ what you get. The quoted mid-market rate is a midpoint; banks and cards add a margin of roughly 1–4% plus fees, so enter your provider’s real rate for a true figure.
- Read it both ways. The inverse-rate tile and the one-click swap button flip the pair instantly, so you always know the cost in either direction.
- Works offline for travel. Because the rate is manual, you can lock in a quoted rate and budget cash, tips and purchases with no connection needed.
- Any pair, even crypto. The codes are just labels — USD, EUR, JPY or BTC — so you can convert against any rate you enter, including a crypto price.

Frequently asked questions
How current are the exchange rates in this currency converter?
There are no built-in rates — you type the exchange rate yourself. This calculator never fetches a live feed and never stores an FX table, so it is as current as the number you enter. Grab today’s rate from your bank, your broker or a rate site the moment you need it, then paste it in. That keeps the tool fast, private and fully offline.
What is the mid-market rate, and why is it different from what my bank gives me?
The mid-market (or “interbank”) rate is the midpoint between the buy and sell prices that big institutions trade at — the rate you see quoted on rate sites. Banks and card networks add a margin on top, usually 1–4%, plus flat fees, so the rate you actually receive is worse. Enter the mid-market rate for a reference figure, or enter the exact rate your provider quoted to see what you will really get.
How do I convert USD to EUR (or any currency pair)?
Set the From code to USD and the To code to EUR, type the amount, and enter the exchange rate as euros per dollar (e.g. 0.92). The converted amount, the inverse rate (dollars per euro) and a quick 1/10/100/1000 table update instantly. The same steps work for any pair — GBP, JPY, CAD, MXN — since the codes are just labels and you supply the rate.
Can I enter my own custom exchange rate for offline use?
Yes — that is the whole design. Because the rate is user-entered, this foreign currency exchange calculator works with no internet connection, which is handy for travel budgeting or locking in a rate a provider quoted you. Enter the rate once and every amount converts against it until you change it.
How do I see historical exchange rate trends or convert by a past date?
This tool does not look up historical rates or rates by date — it only uses the single rate you enter. If you need the rate from a specific past date, find it from your bank statement, a receipt or a rate-history site and type that number in. Results are informational only and reflect exactly the rate you supplied.
Does this money converter support cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin?
Yes, indirectly. Because you enter the rate manually, you can convert against anything — BTC, ETH, a gift-card rate, even a made-up rate for planning. Put the crypto code in the From or To box and enter its price in the target currency as the exchange rate. There is no live crypto feed; the number is whatever you type.
What is the inverse rate, and how is it useful?
The inverse rate flips the pair: if 1 USD = 0.92 EUR, the inverse is 1 EUR = 1.0870 USD. It answers the reverse question without re-entering anything, and the one-click swap button flips the two codes and inverts the rate for you, so you can read a conversion in either direction.
